The argument that a changing climate poses a threat to national and
global security is not new. Following a flurry of activity and research
on the issue in 2007 – 2009, however, interest has waned. Despite the
fact that climate change is referenced repeatedly in the UK Government’s
National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence Review (NSS / SDSR),
“climate security” nonetheless represents an abandoned consensus.
This research report comprehensively outlines the multiple risks to
the stated objectives of the NSS / SDSR, including to UK citizens and
infrastructure at home, and strategic interests abroad, and sets out the
case for the integration of a climate security approach to UK national
security and defence planning.
